Things to Do Summer 2019- Family Friendly

Well, it's that time of year again, kids are either out of school already or are counting down the last few days left!! Are you trying to figure out what you're going to do all summer? Well here's our list of compiled fun things to do to stay busy!! 


1.Sedgwick County Zoo 
5555 W Zoo Blvd, Wichita, KS 67212-1643
Hours: Sunday- Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm


To inspire discovery, appreciation, and respect for animals and nature.On the 4th Tuesday of the month, the Zoo is doing "Tot Tuesdays" with fun and educational activities for the kids. This program is FREE with admission.

2.Botanica: Wichita Gardens
701 Amidon St, Wichita, KS 67203
Hours: Monday - Saturday 9:00 am -5:00 pm

Located in Sim Park, this gorgeous patch of cultivated flora offers themed gardens such as the Butterfly Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Rose and Wildflower Garden, and the award-winning Sally Stone Sensory Garden, plus special programs for children.

3.Cowtown Museum
1865 W Museum Blvd, Wichita, KS 67203
Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm


Be transported back in time at this unique, 23-acre open-air history museum that recreates Wichita and Sedgwick County, Kansas from 1865 to 1880. Museum staff dress in period costume and demonstrate everyday activities including, gardening, tending livestock and cooking. Historic Wichita Cowtown Inc. works with the City of Wichita to further the Museum and its mission. Established in 1952, Cowtown's unique programming chronicles Wichita's transformation from a frontier settlement to a cattle town to an agricultural and manufacturing area. The Museum has the distinction of being accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition achievable by a museum. Accreditation recognizes high standards in individual museums and ensures they continue to uphold the public trust. Only 3 percent of the nation's estimated 34,144 museums are accredited.

May 25-26 Steampunk Weekend
Time: 10am - 5pm (Saturday) & 12 - 5pm (Sunday)
Tickets: Regular admission
Break out your best bib and hold on to your penny farthing (you know, those huge wheeled bicycles) as Cowtown travels to the days of future past. Encounter the spectacle of pirate comedians, live steampunk music and performers of the steampunk variety.

Throughout the day there will be a costume, beard, mustache contests, and numerous photo opportunities, so Gents, shine your fancy whiskers - may the best mug win!


June 29 Celebrate America!
Time: 10am - 5pm
Tickets: Regular admission

​Celebrate Independence at Cowtown with good old fashioned fun! Watch vintage baseball, catch a gunfight, see the saloon girls, play carnival games and watch us crown the King and Queen of Cowtown! This year's Celebrate America promises to provide a good ol' time for everyone. Don't miss the lazy games of horseshoes, sack races, ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers and a beer garden for those lookin' to quench their thirst on the finest brew Cowtown has to offer.

July 27th National Day of the Cowboy

Time: 10am - 5pm
Tickets: Regular admission
​The "National Day of the Cowboy," celebrates the everyday working cowboy. The character who with words and deeds created the west. There will be demonstrations of the many skills that were required to do this tough, demanding and unpredictable work. There will also be music and poetry that reflect the life they lived. In addition, OCM will be celebrating Wichita's birthday, remembering those who by force of will created the largest city in Kansas.

4. Intrust Bank Arena

500 E Waterman St, Wichita, KS 67202

Intrust Bank Arena is a 15,004-seat multi-purpose arena in Wichita, Kansas, United States. It is located on the northeast corner of Emporia and Waterman streets in downtown Wichita. The arena features 22 suites, 2 party suites, and over 300 premium seats.

5. Keeper of the Plains

Check out this Wichita Landmark! During Daylight Savings Time, the Ring of Fire will burn: Seven days a week for 15 minutes at 9 PM



 
6. Exploration Place


Explore exhibits that are there year round as well as check out featured limited time only exhibits throughout the year!

Use this exhibit’s guide for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc., to help your preschooler explore this exhibit. Each station in the exhibit has specific learning goals and activities. Click on a picture below to learn more about them.

8.Wichita Art Museum 
1400 West Museum Boulevard Wichita, KS 67203

The Wichita Art Museum has a special exhibit right now from the Brooklyn Museum on Georgia O’Keeffe. The regular price for viewing this special exhibition is $20 for adults, but in May the Museum is offering a FREE admission day to Georgia O’Keeffe. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019, the museum will have NO ADMISSION FEE to view this special exhibit. 

If you can’t make it on May 25, or if you would rather enjoy the exhibition with less of a crowd, Saturdays are definitely the least expensive days to go.
On Saturdays, admission to the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibition is just $10 for adults and FREE for college/university students with ID and youth up to age 17. Admission to the O’Keeffe exhibition includes general museum admission.
Regular admission prices (Tuesday-Friday and Sunday) are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (60+), $3 for college/university students with ID and youth ages 5-17, and free for children under 5.
